The Railway Children, a former Edwardian railway
keeper’s cottage, was converted and refurbished by the present owners
and first opened in June 1992. It is situated in the Canley area of Coventry and is close to Tile Hill railway station. It is within easy reach of several business centres and industrial estates and only a short distance from Warwick University and the Cannon Park shopping complex. |

The
Railway Children is registered for 36 children aged 0-5 years, this
includes twelve babies. We provide a loving and caring environment for children starting from birth and continuing until school age. Each child will be stimulated by the surroundings we have provided, in which their own individual character can be developed, independence encouraged and imagination and curiosity fired. |
||||||||||||
| In effect we are a large family, helping each other to be well mannered and sociable people by learning to understand, trust and tolerate each other. Our emphasis is and always will be to provide a high quality standard of welfare and high standards of care. | ||||||||||||
|
The nursery is open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm with the exception of Bank
holidays and one week between Christmas and New Year. Parents are advised of the exact dates of these at the beginning of the year. Parents who require childcare outside the normal opening times may discuss their needs with the Manager or Deputy and at the discretion of the owner. The building consists of a large bright playroom, which has plenty of room for various activities as well as chalkboards, a felt board and a book corner. The room has a number of display boards, which are used to display the vast amount of artwork the children participate in. This room is used most of the time for 1-3year olds. |
||||||||||||
| The playroom also serves as a dining room where the children sit with members of
staff in small family groups including babies in highchairs. Here the children are taught basic table manners and how to use a knife and fork in the correct manner. All food is freshly cooked and prepared by our qualified cook who serves a varied menu daily. Special diets are catered for and the menu is displayed weekly on our notice board. Babies are weaned on fresh food only. Drinks are freely available throughout the day and include low sugar soft drinks, milk and water. Meal times: Breakfast 8am-8.30am Dinner 12 noon-1pm and 1pm-2pm Afternoon Tea 3.30pm-4pm and 4pm-4.30pm |

The nursery also employs a daily cleaner, we pride ourselves on our high
standards of hygiene which is reflected in the excellent reports from the
Environmental Health Department.
The conservatory mainly used by 3-5 year olds adjoins the playroom with large double doors, so that the rooms may be joined or used separately. In the conservatory we have our creative play area which is used for sand and water, cooking, playdough, clay, plasticine and many other art activities. It is also the base for our home corner equipment such as our play kitchen, dolls, pushchairs, highchairs and children’s laundry centre. It is also the home to the children's computer, which has supervised internet use, as well as various children's CD ROM's. |
||||||||||||
| The conservatory leads out to our safe and secure garden, which has a paved area for bikes, cars and other wheeled toys. | There is also a well-equipped bark area with an
adventure playground to help develop the children’s physical skills. Children are encouraged to take part in outdoor activities as often as possible. We supply wet suits for all the children and staff. |
|||||||||||
|
There is also a covered area under which our babies sleep in large comfortable traditional high
prams, with written parental consent.
The babies are monitored constantly by members of
staff during their sleeping period. |
||||||||||||
| We
have a separate well-equipped baby room in which we have created a homely
setting with an abundance of toys and a nappy changing area. The
baby room allows the babies to experience a wide range of activities,
which are so important to their early understanding, and comprehension of
the world around them. The nursery supplies babies own brand of milk, terry nappies (laundered on the premises), toiletries and large comfortable prams. |
||||||||||||
|
The nursery also has a fully tiled toilet block which has controlled water temperature for the hand wash basins, a separate utility room containing washing machines and cleaning materials, a staff room, large toy storage, separate staff toilet and a fully fitted kitchen. |

The Railway Children employs a Manager, Deputy,
Nursery officer and an excellent team of nursery nurses. We are very proud
of our staff, our Manager has been with us for 8 years.
We employ mature staff, most with children of their own. Together they ensure that the children are cared for in a warm and loving atmosphere. |
|||||||||||
| The
children are taught traditional values and good social behaviour within
family surroundings. Tradition
is an enormous strength to staff as well as to children, it helps them
achieve and to conform to high standards.
The children spend most of their day in mixed age groups and every child has the opportunity to use the facilities of every room throughout the day. We find that babies progress more rapidly and are happier when mixing with older children developing a caring and loving relationship with them. Space is used to enable children to experience a 'family' setting where children of all ages mix freely, but also provides times and areas where children are cared for by age and stage of development. |
||||||||||||
| We never under estimate the children’s invention or imagination. During pre-school the children are taught to work as individuals as well as being encouraged to work as a group with other children. The children are taught colours, shapes, letters, and numbers as well as problem solving, sorting, role play, ICT skills and simple word recognition amongst other things. The children are all fully involved in each session thus ensuring and maintaining a good level of concentration. | ||||||||||||
| The nursery is registered and inspected by Ofsted. Fees are payable fifty two weeks a year, but I must point
out we do close all Bank Holidays and an extra three days at Christmas. Any full days and any half days, may be available to suit your working week, please ask. Samantha our deputy, is the key worker for our education programme for the three and four year old children. Our expectations are very high which does reflect in the good results that the children achieve and comments made by Ofsted inspectors in our reports. The nursery is registered for the Nursery Education Grant for all children 3-5 years. We are very pleased that we now have a qualified school teacher on our team "Miss Jackie" who works with our pre-school children age 3-5yrs. The Railway Children follow The Day Care Standards supplied by Ofsted and has a number of policies and procedures such as Equal Opportunities, Child Protection, Discipline, Complaints and Health and Safety amongst others. These are displayed for parents at all times on our parent’s information board. The Railway Children follows the Special Educational Needs (SEN) code of practise, this is documented in a separate policy. Niki is the nursery SEN co-ordinator and will answer any questions regarding this specialised area. Our Fees are as follows:
Full Time 0-2 years £140 per week Daily Fees 0-2 years £30 Mornings 0-2 years £15.50 Afternoons 0-2 years £14.50 Due to a scare about how much salt young children consume, we would like to give you information on your child's diet at nursery. We use no
processed foods. Our cook makes all meals fresh, she also makes her own curry sauce, Bolognese sauce, meat pies, pastry, steamed puddings, fair cakes, jam tarts, milk puddings etc. We use best quality products, named brands of cereal, fish, corned beef and drinks. Our only sin is crisps and Wotsits which are served no more than twice in any five weeks. Our cook goes to great lengths to accommodate children with special dietary needs. We may have to change the menu in an emergency, if the cook was ill etc. |
